Supporting Employee Mental Health Awareness

September is Suicide Prevention Month and this week marks Construction Suicide Prevention Week. While the week focuses on the construction industry, mental health challenges affect employees in every sector, including engineering, technical services, and staffing. At Allied Resources Group, we are committed to supporting the well-being of all employees and creating a workplace where seeking help is encouraged and stigma-free.

1. Suicide Is Preventable
Suicide is a leading cause of death among working-age adults in the United States. It affects workers, families, and communities. Suicides can be prevented, and everyone has the ability to play a role in prevention.

2. Recognize the Warning Signs
There is no single cause for suicide, but there are common warning signs. Changes in behavior, mood, or statements about feeling hopeless or unworthy may indicate someone is at risk. Paying attention and taking these signs seriously could save a life.

3. How to Support a Coworker
If you are concerned about a colleague, speak with them privately and listen without judgment. Ask questions such as “Are you okay?” and encourage them to seek support through human resources, the Employee Assistance Program, or a licensed mental health professional.

4. Responding to a Crisis
If someone is in immediate danger, stay with them and seek emergency help. Contact 911 or the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Never try to manage a crisis alone.

5. Available Resources
All employees are encouraged to use professional resources for support. These include:

  • Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988

  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: www.afsp.org

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration: 1-800-321-OSHA (6742) or osha.gov/preventingsuicides

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Contact through HR

Together, we can support suicide prevention and make a difference with an ongoing commitment. By recognizing warning signs, speaking openly, and connecting employees to professional support, we can protect lives and create a safer, healthier workplace for everyone.
